I think people have a christmas fetish. If only it was widely known what the origins of christmas are. (Hint: Pagans invented the whole thing and christianity slapped Christ on it)

The economy would crash if it weren't for Christmas.

I’m a Christian myself and I agree with you about Christmas.

It’s shocking to me how many people who share my faith are unaware of the origins of the holiday they celebrate every year.

Now I’m not legalistic about it so I have no problem celebrating it. The concept of sharing gifts, spending time with family, and decorating a tree is a popular tradition in our culture and I see nothing wrong with it.

I just don’t think we should make it all about the birth of Jesus when it never was about Him in the first place. In fact, I don’t even think it’s respectful to insert Him into a pagan holiday claiming it’s all about celebrating His birth while simultaneously buying into the man made commercialism of the holiday.

For the record, it’s highly unlikely December 25th was His birthday and the Bible never tells us to set aside a day to celebrate His birth. Christians are called to worship Him every day in spirit and truth.

By the way, I’m not trying to push my faith on others. I’m just saying that I agree with you in regards to the origins of Christmas.

Ah yes, the thing that's mathematically guaranteed to crash and burn at some point due to an inconvenient little detail called finite resources. We must pump it full of juice to squeeze out another few decades or years.

Jeez guys. Now we’re talking about religion and the origins of Christmas in the weather thread. Ridiculous.

I wish more christians agreed with this. Honestly, its a fantastic holiday up to a point and there's a reason its so popular, and frankly, a reason it was stolen from them (as shady as that is). I frickin love the idea of it, sharing gifts, seeing family, yada yada. However it's become worse than a plagiarized religious holiday, it's now just become more juice for a bloated, soulless consumerist culture. Hearing Christmas carols non-stop for 2-3 months makes me want to reverse haunt Bing Crosby's ghost. Actually it probably haunts his ghost already when he hears White Christmas playing at Metropolis the day after Halloween.

The Euro is good, except for the valley floors kind of get stiffed a bit.

Not a Christian but I have no problem with your doing the above.

It is also the case that the most important holiday in Christianity is Easter (which is another rebranded Pagan holiday), not Christmas. (Christianity is much more about Jesus' death and resurrection than it is about his birth.) Yet all the big hulabaloo is about Christmas. That alone suffices to prove that the reason Christmas is such a big thing is not religious. It's capitalism: Christmas involves giving gifts as a tradition, and giving gifts implies having to buy them in the first place.

As to rebranded Pagan holidays: of course the early Christians chose to do that. They had to, in order to win converts. The Pagans had these big fun parties as the seasons changed. It was not a winning move to say to potential converts “Join our club and these parties you are used to and enjoy will now be SINS that you will be held accountable for later.” Rebranding Yule and Eostar as having to do with key events in Jesus’ life let early Christians to be able to say “No, we’re not being Pagans anymore. We are celebrating Jesus.” and continue to have the fun festivals. As the old saying goes: “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
It's called clown range for a reason.

What's your Christmas forecast this year?

I think we finally see a sunny Christmas with temps soaring to +11C.

Last year was pretty warm actually, despite the fact we got down to -12 with a half metre of snow a few days earlier.

Honestly. Warm and wet. Any chance of cold this winter will be late November and early December and perhaps a little something in early January
