This could end up being our default pattern for the winter. I think people are overhyping this Niña and setting up for disappointment. Was it 99/2000 that had that record snowpack but barely a lick of sea level snow. A pretty strong Niña doesn’t exactly mean what People want it to.

Yes, that certainly is a possibility.

On the other hand you have another strong Nina winter in '88-89 which had a top tier arctic blast.

No hype here. However, I’m expecting a blend of 1915-16, 1949-50, 1968-69, 1996-97, 2008-09

Weak sauce.

Let's go for an 1861-62 repeat. Fraser River froze solid from late December thru early March. California also saw record rains...the entire central valley turned into an inland sea.

Sounds fun. I’m really not familiar with the details of that one but I’m sure it was crazy.

33mm of rain here today.

1998-99 record massive snow for the mountains. Not much at sea level. The depth of snow on the mountains was over 1000 cm and they had to dig out the chair lifts.

BTW on this day in 2017.

I've said the same thing that there is a decent chance this could happen with dry high pressure on and off all winter.

98-99 was wild on Sutton Pass.. snow on the side of the road was 8+ feet high in some places. Remember going to one of the rest stops and jumping in to the snow and disappearing.

That is certainly possible but in reality, nobody knows what will happen this winter. However, I personally think this winter will deliver the snowy goods. But its understandable that some don't want to raise their expectations too high to prevent disappointment.

I heard the 89 arctic blast was from a SSW. Those events can do wonders in setting up a top tier arctic outbreak. Wasn't the December 2008 blast a result of a SSW as well?

All we know for sure is that atmospheric circulations related to -Enso increase our odds of seeing some colder and snowier outcomes. Nothings for sure. Maybe it works out for us and maybe it doesn’t. This doesn’t feel like a winter that’s going to go zonal for 4 months but we will know for sure come March.

We had a pretty solid arctic shot in mid-late December '98. Other than that, the rest of the winter was very wet with 600-900m snow levels. Was a slightly wetter and warmer version of 2007-08 overall.
