Re: Covid Pandemic
It is beyond insane at this point. Running out of things to say because it's just so surreal to see this happening in front of our eyes. Again, this is a case of one precedent leading to another, which leads to another, etc. It's sad and comical at the same time looking back at many things originally deemed "conspiracy drivel" gradually come true. It's a feedback loop that continues to get worse lest we see a large-scale wave of non-compliance.VanCitySouth wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 4:19 pm I was just coming in to link to a similar article and say silly season is in full swing.
Perhaps what is most important to note: stemming from the three main groups (media, governments, large corporations), the never-ending barrage of the same exact messaging has quite successfully produced entire populations in this country and beyond who have unwavering support in sustaining current "measures" or wanting new "measures" that the aforementioned three groups communicate and/or implement. Of course, this is entirely regardless of how completely illogical, extreme or how much these "measures" continue crush the pillars of liberal democracy.
@Abby_wx mentioned last week how much of this situation has morphed into a pseudo-religion (do we name this The Covidian Cult?) now, and he's right on the money IMO.

It's funny how many of this set of the population were trumpeting the famous Franklin quote, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety", during the Bush/counterterrorism laws era.Typeing3 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 6:21 pm the never-ending barrage of the same exact messaging has quite successfully produced entire populations in this country and beyond who have unwavering support in sustaining current "measures" or wanting new "measures" that the aforementioned three groups communicate and/or implement. Disclaimer: NOT defending Bush, not even close to defending Bush, just pointing both the parallel and the irony.

100%. Just comical how ironic that example is yet many don't realize it at all.VanCitySouth wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 6:35 pm It's funny how many of this set of the population were trumpeting the famous Franklin quote, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety", during the Bush/counterterrorism laws era.

The hypocrisy* is laid bare on other fronts too with little nuance required to see it. Justin Trudeau, for example, is quite famously known for his stance against "hate speech", yet when looking at some of the extremely divisive and inflammatory rhetoric he has spewed regarding the "unvaccinated" in recent months/weeks, it certainly seems as though he does not care much for the very thing he claims to be ardently against.
To me, it almost seems as though those in power (keep in mind, I am not referring to just Trudeau -- many, many other leaders across the world are guilty of this too) who have been using that kind of rhetoric want to guide or provoke people - who have already been backed into an extremely tight corner with so many restrictions and potential loss of employment - into taking more radical action. By consequence, this could mean any harsh response by the state, their backers, along with their ultra-zealous supporters can be easily justified and used as further fuel to enhance this new pseudo-religion.
*Yes, I know we are all hypocrites to some extent, but this example in particular is just so blatantly obvious.

Re: Covid Pandemic
Been a problem in Canada for decades and nothing has been done about it. In fact, the # of hospital beds per 1,000 people has gotten lower and lower every year, especially during the late 80s into the 90s. Here are various articles from prior years regarding overcrowded hospitals. Only difference now (since March 2020) is that there is 24/7 coverage by the media and governments on this topic so most people think the problem is solely caused by covid.

Re: Covid Pandemic
Our health system has been underfunded for years. For me this doesn't change that its getting absolutely blasted right now but it is a more widespread and long term problem. Even the flu could overrun hospitals in previous years.
My classroom has an omicron outbreak. One staff is very ill and another one seems to be recovering well. I've been having possible placebo effects or possibly even mild symptoms that barely show on the surface. I really do think there needs to be more study on how the difference in exposure can change outcomes. For example, if you have a positive person breathing on you for hours or even a few days, as opposed to one passing exposure where the virus lands in you but only a small amount.

What a chilling headline highlighting the rifts in society. This has been brought to you by supposedly liberal governments using the pandemic to sow division for their own political gain. Scapegoating a sizeable segment of the population will not achieve the desired behavioural changes, it will only back them further into a corner and make them lash out even more. They have normalised and even encouraged hatred of fellow citizens, and now vaccinated people have joined the anti-vaxxers in behaving in an irresponsible and counterproductive manner.
