Glad you didn't try the Timex (takes a lickin but keeps on tickin) dive from the cliff into the lake .Cloverdale wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 10:32 pm Just got back this evening from 9 days in Banff, Jasper and Canmore. Saw the big towering thunder storms building near Kamloops. Glacier has retreated since I was there last 19 years ago but was actually surprised there is still quite a bit left. Was super hot wondering around the mount towns. Car thermometer topped out at 37 near Chase at 2pm.

The roped off area has gotten even bigger now.SouthSardiswx wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 10:36 pm It's going to be too dangerous to hike up eventually l recall in 2011 a roped off area where the lake was forming on top and crevices.
It's too the point now that changes are occurring more rapidly. 95 & 97 the trek up was straight forward. Did you check out the glacier visitor center with the 10 dollar coffee and 20 dollar hot dogs. money grab unfortunately.
I didn't even bother going to the glacier visitor centre (on the east side of the hwy) this time around. That parking lot looked hellish. I completely agree about the cash grab. Did the tour bus thing a couple times in the past... don't need to again, especially given how expensive everything is nowadays. They built a skybridge about a km further up from the icefield which is part of the tour nowadays and I incidentally did check out the last time I went through the area in 2016.

Looks like Cloves did the Sulphur mountain gondola ride there's a walk on the top that takes you where the original weather station was located it's now a historical site talk about solitary all winter. in 1995 it was a rocky hike up now there's a nice wooden stairway when we were there in 2011.Forrest Gump wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 10:46 pm Glad you didn't try the Timex (takes a lickin but keeps on tickin) dive from the cliff into the lake .

Been to Banff many times in the past and did end up hiking up Sulphur Mountain once. You can see the trail down below from the gondola.SouthSardiswx wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 11:01 pm Looks like Cloves did the Sulphur mountain gondola ride there's a walk on the top that takes you where the original weather station was located it's now a historical site talk about solitary all winter. in 1995 it was a rocky hike up now it's a nice wooden stairway when we where the in 2011.
The chairlift up to Mount Norway is pretty cool too.
On the topic of mountains in that area. Even though it's shorter than the mountains surrounding the townsite, Tunnel Mountain is the best hike in Banff imo. Since you can walk over to the trail from downtown.

Ah! What? Seriously? After not seeing any mosquitoes wherever I went all summer, I just got bit sitting on my lazy boy , that's ok ,I got the better of him. Amazing how they find that little hole in the screen door when they smell blood.

they have found someone who is sponsoring the repair of the Persephone and they have a new place for it so that's the good Beachcomber news. I remember my grandma was so excited to see Molly's Reach when she came about 25 years ago. Now adays people don't even know Beachcombers.

This is in the top 5 reasons I don't have goats. including goats in trees, goats on cars, goats eating the laundry, etc...Forrest Gump wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 11:22 pm Went to goats on roof marketplace in Coombs on way back , quite the busy place, even on a hot day.

Sheep are much too self respecting to be on a roof...or too clumsy Would be a great tourist draw though.

Yes, all these beautiful, scenic phots are making me wish to go on a road trip. Haven't been away in many years, it's hard to just up and go when you have a farm. maybe I should get goats and pack them on the roofSouthSardiswx wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 11:14 pm Yes that's true Tvaca taking the gondola up l recall seeing people on the trail and we were almost to top of Sulphur also recall seeing anemometers on some of the gondola towers to monitor wind speed.l was trying to think of one of the waterfalls name through the parkway years of water corrosion has made these smooth round whirlpools amazing, Moraine lake look out is another amazing view point

Re: July 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
I think we need to extend the heat wave contest. ec is calling for 29c through Sunday now.
High in Sechelt today 29.6, reached over 31c here, too hot, cooling down nicely now.
21.7 outside 26.7 inside
21.0 in Sechelt.

Re: July 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
In terms of crowds, I like Canmore and “commute†from there into the towns and parks. Less crowds and calmer. Still easy to drive into Banff and score free parking just off the strip. Busy but tolerable.Typeing3 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 11:07 pm Been to Banff many times in the past and did end up hiking up Sulphur Mountain once. You can see the trail down below from the gondola.

If your lucky enough to score parking (before 7:00 am) at Lake Louise it’s a zoo. Was quite surprised how busy it’s gotten. Cannot even get into the hotel or at least Its discouraged. Had a drink at the Banff Springs no issue be there are signs everywhere at Lake Louise that the hotel is for guests.
Getting to Moraine Lake was not possible by car. Was there at 4:45am to try for Sentinel Pass which I had done many years ago but the lot was already full and tightly controlled. Don’t remember it being that way. Ended up parking at Lake Louise up the road and hiking the Big Bee Hive instead. Had lake Agnes all to my self I was so early. Took a shuttle the next day to Moraine to sight see.
Crazy how busy things are.

Yes l thought of extending it out to the weekend but with our short 2 or 3 day heat hump this summer l thought it would end by tomorrow.Roberts Creeker wrote: ↑Thu Jul 28, 2022 11:37 pm I think we need to extend the heat wave contest. ec is calling for 29c through Sunday now.
