The local ski hills will probably be closing by weeks end. Looks so bad up here at Cypress.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
I am hopeful Cypress can at least make some snow next week. The GFS shows some freezing nights. I am sure their reservoir has been filled at least. When it was cold it was fully depleted so they made all the snow that they could.
Apparently 100-150 mm of snow water equivalent has melted up on the local mountains this week.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
59 degrees spread for Puntzi Mountain for the month with expected higher temperatures tomorrow. That's a new record for any month(records since 1969). Old record of 57.8 set in Nov 2005.
50.3 for Tatlayoko Lake with higher temperatures tomorrow. Highest monthly temperature swing since Jan 1943!

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Max high last night was 16.9C here. Since I'm fairly sheltered from the strongest winds, I was a few degrees cooler than the airport.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
El Niño ruined the ski season this winter. But confidence is increasing that we crash back to at least neutral if not La Niña next winter.wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2024 8:55 am The local ski hills will probably be closing by weeks end. Looks so bad up here at Cypress.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
This has only ever happened twice before since the airport records began in 1944, and never in January.
The largest monthly swing was.... yup, you guessed it, June 2021 when the temperature swung from 6.2C to 42.9C. A difference of 36.7 degrees.
The next highest monthly swing was December of 1980 when the temperature went from 18.2 to -16.5, for a difference of 34.7...
BTW, the lowest extreme temperature difference on record occurred in December 1953 when the low was -0.6 and the high was 11.1C.
P.S. The only January that never froze at YXX was in 2006 when the low was 0.5C.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Thank goodness it’s just El Niño driving this and not something far more sinister.
