Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Oooo some of the usual suspects trying to derail the thread again... Will there be any repercussions or no? (I know the answer to this)

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
There’s a few ways this could be categorized: 1. Most snow falling in a single 24-day; 2. Most snow in any 24hr period; 3. Most snow in one snowfall. And that 44cm snowfall on Nov 26, 2006 was a part of a continuous snowfall that dropped about 10cm on the evening of the 25th.AbbyJr wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2024 3:18 pm Title: Abbotsford records its highest daily snowfall in 16 years

I think most snow in one snowfall is the most accurate measure of a weather pattern. In 2017 37cm fell in one continuous snowfall from about 6am Feb 3 - 10pm Feb 4. The snowfall on the 17th was the greatest from the central Fraser Valley since the February 2017 event. The soreness of my body from shovelling—a subjective measure—confirms this as true.

If anyone wants to see visually what sudden stratospheric warming looks like, the purple line in the middle shows this ongoing progression, and my understanding is it takes at least a couple weeks for its impact to commence. So may be interesting as our winter continues.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
I was 6 years old and our elementary school in Upper Lynn Valley was shut down for at least a couple weeks due to the fact that there was more than four feet of snow on people's yards, and the plowed snow banks were so high and the city crews were only able to leave a single lane for traffic down the middle.

More regarding the January 1971 snowstorm in this old post from 2021. Crazy snow totals in Metro Vancouver.
Typeing3 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 4:35 pm I recently compiled snowfall totals for almost every station across the Lower Mainland for the January 1971 snowstorm. Keep in mind, most of these observations are from the old volunteer stations at EC, hence the difference in totals over small areas could be exaggerated due to measuring errors.
Overall, this snowstorm was one of the most significant in recorded history for many areas of Metro Vancouver. I attribute the generally lower totals in S and E Metro Vancouver (Surrey/Maple Ridge) and the Fraser Valley to the track of precip bands and strength of outflow. Temperatures in the valley were also much colder than areas to the west (ex. Sumas Prairie had a high of -11.7c on Jan 11th compared with -3.9c at YVR).

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Most interesting, the Bermuda sunshine triangle of Ladner, Tsawwassen,White Rock got a lot less than YVR/Vancouver. Even chilliwack numbers paled in comparison.
