The outflow really ate up the in coming moisture from east Abby and east Jr. Man. I saw some light freezing rain or ice pellets around 5p.m. nothing now.

Nice call Jr. Man you nailed it this set up did not favour snow for Abbs.AbbyJr wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 12:51 pm Track of this low is not favourable for the Fraser Valley. Not enough moisture to overcome dry outflow before upper levels warm. Freezing rain will become a concern though later this evening and overnight. What a fun snow day yesterday. Maybe we can score another snowfall in February?
Nah let's just wait until March and get a 1951 repeat.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Temp has been bouncing around between 0.0c and -0.5c for the past few hours.
Precip has lightened up here. Looks like freezing drizzle now and is not comparable to the icing events we've seen during the past couple winters. Looks to be only about 1-3mm of ice accretion depending on the surface. Ice pellets from earlier also visible in this pic.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
So looking back on my thoughts from this morning about how today probably should have been a snow day. By Noon the schools had made the call that the buses couldn’t run for after school pick up and drop off and after school care was canceled. So parents all had to pick up their kids from the schools.Monty wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:24 am Yea there is always 2 sides. I read a bunch of people whining last week that they didn’t call a snow day on Friday cause we had a few centimetres of snow and it was too cold for the kids to wait at the bus. But I was out driving and the roads were pretty good. And my daughter actually wants to go to school. There was no need for a snow day for 90% of the area.
Of course today there is school here but we have a snowstorm moving in. I think they should call a snow day today, people are going to be scrambling to pick their kids up from school or daycare around lunchtime or early afternoon. Chaos to be sure. (My daughters school is closed because their sprinkler system malfunctioned and flooded 10 classrooms the other day)

Looks like the freezing rain will bust out here. Temperature starting to warm and still no signs of any moisture approaching the Fraser Valley.

1991/92 (which was a pretty awful El Niño winter aside from some late October snow), was a +PDO winter. So cautiously optimistic we will avoid a repeat of that. Still think most areas will struggle to get so much as 30 cm of snow total, but that still leaves room for a nice snowfall or two.
"Lets think a little more positive Rubes. Nothing has happened..Jr says maybe. Lets shoot for 40-70+cms thanks "
Never say never Rubus..you are now north of the 49th!!

That reminds me… we have now had two arctic blasts this winter: the one in late October and the one that just ended.Hawk wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2024 5:38 am Rubus_Leucodermis wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 8:24 pm

Not many winters have three.
And my snowfall estimate for the recent storm was one of the higher ones. Some here were doubting so much as 20 cm would fall.
It's called clown range for a reason.

The latest teleconnection forecasts all look like pineapples for the PNA. The PNA briefly dips below 0 and mostly remain above 0.
