Never. They didn't have snow days when I was a kid, unless you were in private school.Weather101 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:03 am I honestly can't remember... That should definitely tell you something haha
I don't remember having a snow day as a kid myself
I remember missing one day of high school due to the snow, only because my dad couldn't get the car out. I think it was in January 1996.
I remember showing up for school some days and only half the students showed up, and sometimes there was no teacher either, so they had one teacher going back and forth between multiple classrooms.

It's easier to take a blanket approach of shutting the city down it seems.
We have seen a massive influx of people that are really ill-equipped to handle snow in the region. There are zero educational campaigns to make newcommers aware of the dangers of ice and snow.
We need winter driving lessons, winter prepardness kits in vehicles and tips for dressing for the conditions including ice cleats for kids who walk in the snow. My wife is a teacher and sees kids either being overdressed for +15C weather or underdressed for -5C weather.

Completely agree.
Though kids being underdressed in the cold is something that will never go away.

Are you saying the Canucks make the finals?Weather101 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 7:58 am 30 cm of snow? A bit more snow today? A week of cold weather that some ponds actually froze to skate on?
Yeah, the curse for this year is broken. I'd go as far to say the curse in general is now broken.
The fact Vancouver has once again seen a snowstorm before Toronto, especially in January, is a win.
Our winters are so much different than the rest of Canada. We are a warm climate, so to get this in an El Nino is definitely a curse breaker.
If this was any other part of Canada they laugh because this is nothing to them, But for the west coast it was a major event.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
I never had snow days as a child in Illinois. Other neighbouring school districts called snow days, but never mine, probably because most of its students walked to school. Worse yet, I was in Illinois during a long run of dud winters. The year before my family moved in, there had been a big snow, and the other kids never stopped talking about it. The winter after my family moved out was the first of two back-to-back epic winters in the Midwest. That really stung. (As a consolation prize, I they did have a big snow in April, which being in April melted fast, but was fun just because of the novelty factor but it did not define a winter by having a thick blanket around for months.)Weather101 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 9:05 am I don't think I ever had a snow day.. maybe one in elementary? And the town we moved to in the southern Rockies then began its own string of dud winters, so once again I got to hear the other kids talk about how epic it was before I had moved there. It took until I was in high school for the curse to break, and when it finally happened, it was glorious. I still remember the feeling of realizing how 20 cm had fallen already, there was absolutely no sign of it stopping anytime soon, and that I was finally experiencing a big snow.

Take a look at the lions cam. You can see all the way to the island. Lower levels look dry for the moment. Ceiling still high.
