Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Honestly I don't really care. There is kids that are happy about that and there's that are not. My daughter applied for UBC, UT and McGill engineering and missing those tests is huge for her in grade 12 and this is the last week of the semester.Monty wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:24 am Yea there is always 2 sides. I read a bunch of people whining last week that they didn’t call a snow day on Friday cause we had a few centimetres of snow and it was too cold for the kids to wait at the bus. But I was out driving and the roads were pretty good. And my daughter actually wants to go to school. There was no need for a snow day for 90% of the area.
Of course today there is school here but we have a snowstorm moving in. I think they should call a snow day today, people are going to be scrambling to pick their kids up from school or daycare around lunchtime or early afternoon. Chaos to be sure. (My daughters school is closed because their sprinkler system malfunctioned and flooded 10 classrooms the other day)

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Better safe than sorry is what I always say. A lot of people were definitely bitching last week. We had over 30 cm with more snow coming in right now. Makes perfect sense for everyone's safety to call it a snow day especially if the afternoon commute is a mess.Monty wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:24 am Yea there is always 2 sides. They weigh it out and they clearly thought safety for 1000s of people was more important.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
YVR has recorded a few monthly mean temps below 1c since 1993. Just hasn't been in January. Had any of those patterns occurred in January (ex. Dec 2008, Dec 2016, Feb 2019, Dec 2021), a cooler outcome would have been likely.Rubus_Leucodermis wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 7:52 am Based on this, we just experienced the 10th greatest snowfall since 1898, and the 3rd greatest January snowfall. Add to that the coldest daily January temperatures in about 40 years and it’s safe to say the January curse has been broken.
No, the monthly mean temperatures will not fall, but you can’t win ’em all. This month has been sufficiently excellent to break the curse. And I wouldn’t be surprised if we make progress on some of those monthly mean stats before the 2020’s end.
My point is more regarding a cold month, not individual events. If that is your criteria, then we certainly have broken the curse. Just not for a cold January.

It only takes one bad injury or death. They are protecting their own asses.
Your daughters exam should most definitely have a make up date.

Yea I think a snow day today makes sense. They didn’t call one here and they probably should have.Weather101 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:48 am Better safe than sorry is what I always say. It was different when I was a kid. The schools were always open.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
The Tri-Cities school district never used to call snow days, even during the big storms. Seemed like that changed around 2019.Weather101 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:03 am I honestly can't remember... That should definitely tell you something haha
I don't remember having a snow day as a kid myself

12Z GFS and GEM have taken away the pineapples
Looks damp but not too wet now. No snow for the North Shore but still looks respectable for in the inner mountains.

I'm pretty certain she will get a makeup test, tho! It wouldn't make any sense that they wouldn't, and that would be really unfair.
Best of luck!!

Probably it would not matter as much for her personally, she is 98 and 96 % at both subject bur for those kids is extremely competitive. She wanted to up her percentage maybe she wouldn't have so who knows.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
The way I look at it is that we all know how the drivers are here on an average day, let alone snow.
The last thing you need is a young kid getting badly injured on a day that can easily be made up. Life is precious and should be treated like so.
And we all know If something was to occur the schools would be blamed for being open.
