5 cm of new wet snow! Always thought this might happen, but not this much before the changeover. Was saying up to 4 cm a few days ago.
It's called clown range for a reason.

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
+7 and an overnight thaw at KBLI, +0.6 and overnight wet snow here. I have seen this sort of thing happen many times in the observations. It is why I was expecting some transitional snow (though not quite so much as I got) all along.
What’s going on? Cold air banking against the North Shore Mountains. Bellingham is on a south-facing stretch of coast, and has the flat Fraser Valley to its north. When the south wind comes, it is Game Over for low-level cold, which quickly scours out.
Not so for Vancouver. The mountains get in the way! There is simply no good place for that cold, dense air to go. In fact, the air to the south that does get pushed north ends up piling up against those mountains as well. Result is a deeper layer of cold air that enables it to snow down to low elevations.
For a while that is. The cold is still being eroded and moderated; it’s just taking longer. Generally these set-ups vanish within 24 hours.

It did snow here as well. I come to this place to have some serious weather discussion, but all the bs that Nito was pulling last it really makes it difficult to post here. I understand he gets HARD on warm temps. and rain but keep it real from time to time. All his knowledge is wasted in the pile.

Even now EC is forecasting Periods of Snow mix with rain tomorrow morning. Just like the GFS has been modeling.Rubus_Leucodermis wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 7:51 am +7 and an overnight thaw at KBLI, +0.6 and overnight wet snow here. Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
Yes good point. I know Nito the needler likes to stick it us snowlovers..but it doesnt bug me. The chips fall as they will, in spite of his negative and rainy outlook. He is not always wrong, and not always right. Ahhh weather in the LM, so tuff to predict.Storm wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 7:52 am It did snow here as well. Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
I finally beat VanCitySouth, who had been consistently beating me in the snow totals up to this morning. I think that’s because of the more southerly aspect of this one. Earlier events had a more westerly aspect, and I’m in the lee of Little Mountain. It’s surprising how much even very modest terrain features like that can have on precipitation.
This time, however, the flow would place that shadow to the north of Little Mountain instead of to its east. If it existed at all, that is, and I suspect it does not. The summit of that hill is doubtless still against the boundary layer of the low level cold banked up against the North Shore Mountains that the precipitation is just riding over.
These sort of events are often wins for Canada in the snow department. The rain/snow line often comes close to matching the border, in fact! I have seen this pattern many times in the reported observations over the years.

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
It has that same look of wet slop that my much more modest amount of new snow does. You will probably get a lot more of it in the coming day or two. I hope your power stays on through it all.

He's just bitter at being soundly defeated for this entire month. And maybe his call for ridge-vember as well
I will never let him forget that one.

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
It is so nice to see us out-snow places south of us. That's how it should be. We are farther north, and we are better people.
