The snow from yesterday is still hanging around for the most part. Side streets are still compact snow/ice. Main roads were much better this am compared to last night.

Question: Do we need 850mb temperatures down to -8C for low elevation snow if we have a NE outflow and an interior cold pool?

All that's required is for the entire air column to be below freezing. Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm certain there were times where 850s were only about -3/4, but there was a very flat temperature gradient and it was -1 at the surface.

I think you are correct. I am always looking at 850mb temps for reference.

Nope! With arctic air at the surface, 850mb temps will often warm faster as cold air is dense and sinks. Hence why freezing rain can become an issue.

So essentially, as long as all layers (925/825/2m) are at or below freezing, we can get low elevation snow?

Correct. 2m temps below, at or just slightly above freezing.

Wow - My absolute high temp today at my house was -12.4C. While I wasn't technically around to confirm it - I'm amost 100% certain it beat the most extreme low-high temp we had back on Dec 27, 2021. This would make it the coldest daily high temp I've ever measured in my life living in Abbotsford (we moved here in 1978 when I was quite young). I've just combed through a number of years of weather records for YXX, but it appears (unless I'm missing something) the last time that happened was back in December 1968. That's over 53 years ago lol

Edit: I should confirm - I'm a number of kms east of yxx, so that might skew things a bit, also I didn't have a personal weather station way back in the day.

Sacrificed a water pipe instead of a plane this time.
