Re: Covid Pandemic
While I believe that wearing masks is helpful, something about them seems to cause people to lose all sense of perspective. And that goes for people on both sides of the debate. If people put half the energy towards social distancing that they put towards the mask debate, we might have beaten this pandemic already.

Re: Covid Pandemic
From CBC news:
Donnelly described his firing as censorship by an institution that he's followed for 50 years and been publicly associated with since 2001.
"Sports figures, entertainers, politicians, et cetera, can stand for anything as long as it supports the narrative. You can support rioting, looting, destruction of livelihoods and reputation, but take a position against the narrative and you are worthy of exile or worse."

Re: Covid Pandemic
Disagreed. That sounds like a lot like persecution complex to me. This idea that lots of people supported those riots seem to be completely cooked up. People were differentiated the peaceful protesters from the rioters and they supported the cause of the peaceful protesters. The rioters didn't have support from anybody I can think of and most people were clear about that. Those are caused by provocateurs, who in some cases were found to be from the far right or provocated by heavy handed police tactics. Do we blame the entire Canucks fanbase for the 2011 riots? I don't...just like people who supported BLM should not be assumed to be supporting rioting. Rioters and looters are usually opportunists. So IMO he missed on that point.John wrote: ↑Sun Dec 06, 2020 4:53 pm From CBC news:

And the fact that he's been associated with the institution since 2001 or has followed for 50 years are completely irrelevant. The Aquilinis are trying to weather this storm and they cannot afford to be seen associating with fringe anti mask rallies when a dozen people are dying a day in BC from this illness. Fans who've lost a loved one or support the cause like the majority of people do would not be happy to see this. And this is surprising coming from somebody like Francesco who has shown to be quite callous in his treatment of people in the past. But its his pocketbook that speaks the loudest to him.
And finally, I think he lost credibility when he used the word censorship. He was allowed to perform and will be allowed to again. If the Canucks had the power to prevent him from performing, then yes, that would be censorship.

Re: Covid Pandemic
If you're a public figure working for a high profile business, you must accept that what you do off the ice can reflect poorly on the team. It doesn't have to be illegal, immoral, or poor taste. It need only be an a controversial position that draws a negative emotional reaction from a sizeable percentage of the population. Where that line is is not definable (eg. Donnelly sang at a pro-life rally before, and that didn't cross the line, but had a sizeable number of people negatively reacted he could have been fired). Best to stay out of controversial topics until you retire if you're a public figure.

In no situation ever? I work at a school. Can you not think of a few opinions that I could hypothetically have which should probably get me fired from working with kids? Use your imagination.
There's obviously a line somewhere. For a guy who already has a widely reported bad history with labour relations and foreign workers, Francesco certainly didn't want to get dragged across that line by a guy who sings for 2 minutes and is easily replaceable.

john. Are you saying there are zero opinions that someone is legally allowed to have that would disqualify you from representing a business publically? Such extreme pro labour views, im a little surprised.

I agree. I don't like it either, but it isn't illegal to fire someone if they're a Communist or an anti-masker or one who yells FHRITP to a reporter. You have to know what your employer finds unacceptable.

I honestly didn't know that. I would've assumed favoring the business side of things so my bad for assuming. I'll post the numbers in a bit, lower case numbers today are encouraging.
