Doubtful. The American team looks very strong, quite possibly stronger than their 2010 Olympic squad who did demolish Canada 5-2 during the group stage. Of course we won when it mattered but I am concerned this go around with the lack of elite goaltending depth. Tournament play could be key here as one of Canada's goalies needs to get hot for a couple games.

Epic trade l thought for sure we were cup bound and then No/95 Bure blew his knee out.

Vancouver Canucks Pavel Bure, Alex Mogilny and Pat Quinn in 1995, when Mogilny joined the NHL team in a trade from the Buffalo Sabres.

It'll be an interesting tournament for sure, but unfortunately many top players won't be participating, like Draisaitl, Kucherov, Pastrnak, Necas, Panarin, Kaprizov, Ovechkin, Marchenko, Stutzle, etc

Yeah, it's a bit of a joke in how they set this whole thing up.

I'm excited to see Crosby (hopefully his injury isn't serious) and McDavid finally being able to suit up and play for the maple leaf together.

I'm perfectly fine with keeping the Russians out. But, they should have included the other countries and made it more of a traditional tournament. I'll still watch, of course.

Excluding one country based on a measure that others have consistently engaged in on a more consistent basis yet have never faced similar consequences epitomizes the state of world geopolitics, rules for thee and not for me. The empire of the day ultimately controls the narrative and there's ultimately nothing the common folk can do about it. When mixed with sport, and on the topic of this upcoming tournament specifically, it has resulted in the exclusion of a team who certainly would have increased the level of competition to the overall tournament, given the calibre of players that exist.

Politics aside, the entire tournament is a bit of a joke as previously mentioned. My personal opinion has always been that hockey should have more international tournaments that include the best players in the world, whether that's every two years or four years, like other major sports in the world. Given Czechia won the world championships last year, they clearly should've been included in this one and could've acted as the qualifying tournament, but the NHL and IIHF always seem to be on different wavelengths.

I can only speak of what is happening currently. Perhaps it is unfair to penalize the athletes for the actions of their leaders, but when a sovereign country is being actively attacked or threatened with annexation, that goes beyond sport. Of course other countries are and have committed such offences, but in this very moment, it is Russia.

Just my opinion.

I'm with you. As terrible as the USA has been to many countries over the last 100 years, this does feel like a reasonable punishment for what's been and is still being done to Ukraine.

Then again, what the USA is talking about doing to it's neighbours might make this all a moot point.

I'm not sure if I'll watch or not. Might get sucked in, might not. I've been a little less tuned into this NHL season in general, trying to follow other passions like music, yoga, etc. Hard to say if a weird international tournament will get me interested or not.

A line has now clearly been demarcated in regards to what qualifies a nation to be banned from sport. Has the same criteria been applied to other nations who are currently engaging in, or have previously engaged in the same? No -- and this is where I see an issue, where some can and not suffer any consequences whatsoever, yet others can and will be punished, depending on which nation one belongs to.

Now, the solution could be we either see the sporting bodies of these nations all get punished collectively due to their nations' foreign policy actions in the past or at present, or they don't get punished, given the individuals at hand (in this case, sports players) have no part or say in their nations' foreign policy. Given the latter has veen the primary rule of the land throughout the past and even into the contemporary age, it seems rather odd to deviate from it and apply it only to one nation. Again, just my personal observations and opinion.

I was going to say as a true blue Canadian hockey fan l'll follow but l'm not sure about watching if the Canada qualifies for the semis and so on most likely l'll watch but l'm just not feeling it.

There's actually no semis. It's group stage (round robin) play where each team plays each other once, and the two teams with the most points will face off in the final.

To my knowledge, it's 3 points for a regulation time win, 2 points for an overtime win, 1 point for an overtime loss, and 0 points for a regulation time loss.

Three games total, so the margin for error is very small. Canada will need at least 2 regulation time wins to have any chance of getting to the final, IMO.
