Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
What happens if the southerly winds get delayed? And the usual snow belts end up with mostly snow? Even EC seems a uncertain

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
I always like to think of Dec/Jan '92-93 as a more extreme version of 2016-17. Was a great winter. Snow depth in those kind of winters often seems higher because many places (in residential areas specifically) have piles everywhere.Abby_wx wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 3:25 pm That cold snap was pretty darn impressive. Lasted about 22 days, during which time there was no rain whatsoever. Nowadays, we feel lucky to go 10 days without rain.
Shame about all the missing data, but I recall peak snow depths of over 30 cm in Fraser Heights.
Yeah I don't know what's up about the missing data for YVR and YXX.
There is snow and depth data for the Surrey Guildford station. Peaked at 36cm on Jan 4th: https://climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_d ... pe=navLink
In Coquitlam, most areas had snow on the ground from mid Dec thru late Jan. Settled depth got pretty impressive in early Jan after the snowstorm on the 3rd/4th, and the piles were huge for weeks.

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
Considering Guildfords height and location and often more extreme weather, there should STILL be a weather station there.

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
It's sad looking at historical data and seeing how many stations there were in the lower mainland, before they really started to disappear in large numbers during the 90s. Coverage is pathetic these days.

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
Snow with higher accumlations over higher terrain.
Snowfall accumulation: 10 to 15 cm.
Location: Areas of higher terrain of the North Shore, Coquitlam, Burnaby, and Vancouver.
Time span: Overnight to Sunday morning.
Remarks: A weather system will reach the south coast tonight bringing a mix of snow and rain.
Light snow is expected to begin over Metro Vancouver overnight. Temperatures will begin to rise as warm air advances from the Pacific. On Sunday morning the snow will change to rain for lower elevations of Metro Vancouver. However, the change from snow to rain over areas of higher terrain will be delayed. Periods of heavy precipitation can produce snow as some cold air will linger on Sunday. Snowfall accumulations in excess of 10 cm are expected over higher terrain by Sunday afternoon.
Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

I find it really interesting how despite the large differences Sun-Tues in the models, they all arrive to the same conclusion Wed night (that large snowstorm being depicted across GFS, ICON, ECMWF, and GEM).

Re: January 2022 Forecasts and Discussions
Weird, checked if I have a snowfall warning but no I just have a sws up. When I clicked on it it showed SWS for snow or rain and a Wind Warning that just went up with minimal info and no warning on the main page. Maybe it's coming???

Oddly enough I have a higher confidence in Wednesday night than at any time over the next 72 hours. I have no clue what will happen from now until Tuesday night.
