That was my understanding. But also the anticyclonic flow around a west based NAO should, in theory, help hold the cold in the west when co existing with an Alaskan block

If this upcoming event which is still far in the future, falls apart, this will be the end of our winter. Bring on sunny 14c in February please and thank you.
What was looking like a perfect setup now has different solutions emerging. I think we will be lucky to get a brief cold snap with some snow and then it'll probably moderate again.

W Campbell River area reportedly seeing some insane snow.

Webcams seem to confirm wet snow.

Air pressure dropped below 990mb now. That’s pretty low.

Yep. These types of setups in the past have generally lead to significant/persistent cold spells in the west.

Great. With rain on the local mountains and all the way up to the Coquihalla. This area just sucks

I'd say the criteria for a significant arctic blast is 850mb temps below -15c at YVR but anything below -20c is pretty rare - especially these days.

Probably have to go back to late Dec '96 for anything remotely close at YVR...maybe even Dec '90 for the last time the upper levels got that cold.
