I don't think that there was much smoke in Vancouver until the last decade. Wonder if it's related to climate change. hmmm

Smoke in 2017 and 2018 undoubtedly lasted much longer, but most of the time it wasn't thick like this at the surface (had to go above 300m to notice a strong smell). Most of the major fires back then were at high elevations such as the interior plateau so the smoke was mostly confined to the upper levels and seldom descended towards the surface for long periods of time.

It is definitely worse in the lower mainland. Prince George had it worse back in 17/18 I believe it was.Typeing3 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 4:20 pm Interesting. I feel like its worse this time around.

I sure hope EC is right with their forecast. This Sh*t really takes the joy out of life.
It always snows in December in the Kootenays

How do you know that there was fog also and that it was not just smoke?
It's been bad here all day, looking forward to clean air again. Hopefully soon.

Traditionally, coal tar, aka “creosote.†As the name implies, it is distilled from coal. Contains a nasty soup of toxic and carcinogenic compounds. Is also quite combustible. Has nothing to do with the desert shrub by the same name.Hound wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 10:37 pm Sure is! I can smell the chemical they coat the logs with all the way over here.

My previous place of residence had an EPA Superfund site. It was the location of an old creosoting plant.
It's called clown range for a reason.

Re: September 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
Rain has begun vanishing from the model runs.
No rain for the next 10-14 days. No reprieve from this smoke.
At this point we need a powerful W-E oriented low to suck the smoke from the lower troposphere and eject it eastward. This seems unlikely within the next 2 weeks.

Yeah, not much potential in the next 10 days or so. Looks like the fall jet ramps up thereafter though.wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 14, 2020 11:10 am Rain has begun vanishing from the model runs.

In the short term, it does look like we'll see at least a few mm of rain on friday.
