Just had a quick 20 minute downpour...weird thing is it didn't show up on radar. (https://atmos.uw.edu/current-weather/northwest-radar/) Anyone know why this would be?

Re: July 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
My cell phone lit up with a SWS all over the place , here I'm thinking we're under a thunderstorm watch , no such luck, instead a heat warning, yuck
3:42 PM PDT Friday 24 July 2020
Special weather statement in effect for:
Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
First Heat of the Season Starting Sunday.
A ridge of high pressure will build over southern BC this weekend producing the highest temperatures experienced so far this summer over the Lower Mainland, Sea to Sky and Vancouver Island.
Daytime maximums will reach the low 30's on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures will start to lower on Tuesday as the ridge weakens allowing slightly cooler marine air to invade the south coast.
The public is advised to take measures to reduce their exposure to the heat:
-Stay cool and hydrated, particularly during the hottest period of the day from 1pm to 5pm.
-Limit outdoor activity during the day to early morning and evening.
-Dress for the weather by wearing loose, light-weight clothing. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
-Keep your home cool. Open windows, close shades or blinds, use an air conditioner and prepare meals that do not require an oven.
-NEVER leave children or pets alone in a parked car.

Re: July 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
No idea but around 3pm I saw a huuuuuuuuge and biiiiiig dark cloud overhead here. It didn't amount to anything unfortunately. No rumbles or even sprinkles. Just typical Vancouver blue balls.Roberts Creeker wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 10:14 am Just had a quick 20 minute downpour...weird thing is it didn't show up on radar. None in south Sardis unless it was a trace but I didn't notice any this morning or anything in the rain bucket.

Re: July 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
I guess last weeks mini heatwave didn't warrant a warning is that cause temps at the airport (YVR) never reached a certain temp. for consecutive day's?Forrest Gump wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 4:41 pm My cell phone lit up with a SWS all over the place , here I'm thinking we're under a thunderstorm watch , no such luck, instead a heat warning, yuck

Re: July 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
Actually a fairly good chance that will still be standing after this heat wave is all over, given how YVR airport is so affected by sea breezes. Notice how far down on that list you have to go before you get to a stretch recorded when the weather station was downtown.
It's called clown range for a reason.

Unfortunately, some people will actually believe that stat means something. I think it needs to come with a disclaimer.Rubus_Leucodermis wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 10:00 am Actually a fairly good chance that will still be standing after this heat wave is all over, given how YVR airport is so affected by sea breezes. I like to point out that Abbotsford experienced somewhere between 22 and 24 days with highs of 30C in 2018 alone (likely closer to 24 days, a few hot days had missing data). The average for Abbotsford is 8 days per year (perhaps 9 now accounting for climate change).

Agreed, it's pretty ridiculous. As we've discussed before, YVR is a poor representation of our region's weather.Abby_wx wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:39 am Unfortunately, some people will actually believe that stat means something. I think it needs to come with a disclaimer.

If they ever got around to upgrading the Pitt Meadows station (which is extremely unlikely), it would definitely be a better location to use as a baseline for our climate, from a regional perspective IMO.

YVR is representative of the coast only.Typeing3 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:48 am Agreed, it's pretty ridiculous. As we've discussed before, YVR is a poor representation of our region's weather.

There's a lack of (good) weather stations in Greater Vancouver, especially from East Van to Coquitlam. This area would be more representative of the climate of Metro Vancouver.
By the way, Pitt Meadows is not so bad...

Re: July 2020 Forecasts and Discussions
Any guesses on how hot tomorrow and Monday will be? EC is calling for 27 and 28 with nights of 14 for Sechelt...doesn't sound too bad but they did issue us a SWS.
