I'm already vegan and have found it does help moderate my allergy symptoms somewhat.

What made my hay fever not disappear but get a lot more manageable was moving away from the Willamette Valley and its concentration of grass seed farms. About 80 to 90 percent of the world's grass seed is raised there. To make matters worse, lawn grasses tend to have highly allergenic pollens; three of the big grass seed species raised in the WV rank in the list of the ten most allergenic pollens.

I found a lot to like about Portland but the grass pollen mostly ruined the place for me. Just as soon as the weather finally got reliably warm and sunny after the long rainy season, I'd have to become a shut-in because going outdoors made me get so sick. Totally sucked to miss a huge chunk of the warm season like that.

That's interesting, I never thought about grass seed farms. Is the weather as good though? That's what really counts...at least on this forum. If it isn't you can use Hawk's Moving Co...favourite movers of the forum...When your weather's not snowy enough Move!

One reason Bellingham appealed to me is it's just a notch more wintry than Seattle in the winter, while still being on the mild side of the mountains. Hardly the main reason, but it was in my mind as I was deciding where to relocate.

I still have never understood this whole "true" vs "backdoor" Arctic blast terminology. During any Arctic blast, we always see NE winds in the valley. So why is it that sometimes the winds drop the temperature and other times they raise them? Can you give me a couple visual examples?

Backdoor blast. Early December 2009. Note the 850mb temperatures on the bottom left...colder in eastern Washington and Oregon than here in SW BC. The size and tilt of the block favour a more E/NE flow over us. This is a setup which has repeated many times over recent years (ex. Dec 2013, Feb 2014 and Jan 2017) It's the best kind of pattern to maximize cold for those further south in Oregon or Eastern Washington but not for us.

True arctic blast. Mid/late December 1990. Note the more north/south orientation of the 850mb temps...the further south one goes, the warmer it gets. Also note the strong surface high situated in northern BC at the 1000mb level on the bottom right. This is when we can see those intense arctic fronts that can hit like a freight train with temps dropping 5-10C in just one hour with an intense period of heavy snow.

Wow, welcome back! You know a few of us went looking for you but you were nowhere to be found. We posted links to this new forum on social media and mass emailed the users but some due to whatever reason never found us. So welcome back!

I think I signed up with a burner account initially and I no longer control that email, but yeah to me it just seemed like y'all disappeared and I gotta tell you, life just wasnt the same when you don't have this online community to share your love of weather with.

EDIT: I also should mention that I've moved to the North Shore from downtown. I'm back near sea level again but I'll benefit from some increased mountain precip as a trade off...
