Early indications are that Mexico and Canada have been spared today's reciprocal tariff sledgehammer. You can bet 99% of mainstream media will spin this to mean it's a win for Mr.uh um uh um um uh Carney. Time to put the tariff thing behind us and concentrate on building up the economy and creating jobs with a new government, to undo the damage from last 10 liberal years.

Exactly. While Canada does face a dual threat with the tariffs Trump has already imposed, the biggest threat to our economy is Mark Carney.

Fake news? Apparently all those reciprocal tariffs are not based on real tariffs but on a trade deficit formula with that country.

After today's tariff nothing burger, how long can the liberals and their media allies keep the Trump/tariff narrative going?

I mean, there's still 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, 10% on energy and potash, and the auto sector tariffs are about to kick in, though the exact details are less than clear.

A small win today, but we're certainly not out of the woods yet. It remains to be seen what demands Trump will make when he sits down with our next PM to renegotiate/replace CUSMA.

Poilievre pitches expanding U.S. trade to fund Canada's military

https://financialpost.com/federal_elect ... s-military

Sorry, but this makes zero sense.

Trump already thinks the US is buying too much from Canada, so why would he want to buy even more of our stuff? It's clear that he wants to rebuild the US economy by bringing manufacturing back to the US. A renegotiated CUSMA is likely to be more restrictive, not less. Otherwise, the US trade deficit with Canada is likely to continue growing as Canadians shun US goods.

Our over-reliance on exporting our goods to the US is what got us into this mess. It would be a huge strategic mistake to double down on that.

Even if we did manage to expand US exports by some small amount, the revenues would come nowhere close to funding our military.

I do think it's a little bit silly as an idea especially with the current anti-American rhetoric. I also believe that Mark Carney, if given the chance, would also expand trade with the US.

You're probably right. All politicians talk a big game, but when push comes to shove would they actually follow through?

Regardless, I don't think Trump is going back down anytime soon. He's got too much invested in his tariff plan to admit defeat. It's possible he could back down if the US economy gets too bad. Hopefully by then Canada will have diversified our trade enough so that we won't need the US to take 80% of our exports.

I think Trump would spin it as a win, that other countries are wanting to work with USA to help both countries prosper.

The problem is that non-voters don't actually show up to vote. Old people vote, and they're leaning Liberal.

BTW, it's not over per se, but it's a huge uphill battle for the CPC.

What's interesting about the NDP collapse is that it means the Conservatives could do really well on Vancouver Island, the best in 20 years, but do terrible in the interior and Lower Mainland. The Liberals could actually a few ridings in the Okanagan.

The Conservatives are rising in Quebec, but their numbers are not good in Ontario.
