Re: Sports Talk
Wow , can't believe Pederson is in that elite group , and just canucks luck that it all went downhill after acquiring him in one of the most lopsided trades in not just canucks but NHL history.
In 1982–83, he finished with 46 goals and 107 points. He led the Bruins in assists and points, and finished fifth in league scoring (the only player in the top eight not to eventually make the Hockey Hall of Fame). In the playoffs, he would take his game to another level, as he and Middleton wreaked havoc combining for 65 points in just 17 games before losing out to New York Islanders in the conference finals. Pederson finished third in playoff goals and points despite not reaching the finals.
Pederson continued his exploits in 1983–84, posting 39 goals and 77 assists for 116 points. His assist and point totals again led the Bruins, and his point total placed him sixth in the NHL. His 77 assists were third in the league behind only Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey. He played in his second consecutive NHL All-Star Game, and was selected to represent Canada at the 1984 Canada Cup tournament that summer.
At this point Pederson, despite being only 23, was on par with players such as Denis Savard, Michel Goulet, Ron Francis and Hawerchuk, all of whom went on to the Hall of Fame. However, his career would take a turn in the summer of 1984 when he was diagnosed with a benign tumor in his shoulder. He returned for only 22 games in the 1984–85 season, posting 12 points, before a second, more serious surgery had to be performed on the shoulder. This procedure required the removal of part of his shoulder muscle, and forced him to miss the remainder of the season.
Pederson returned to Boston's lineup for the 1985–86 season, but did not perform at the level he had prior to his injury. He finished the season with respectable totals of 29 goals and 76 points, good for fourth on the team but a 40-point drop from his last healthy year two seasons previous. At the conclusion of the season, Boston GM Harry Sinden, traded Pederson to Vancouver Canucks for Cam Neely and Vancouver's first round pick in the 1987 entry draft, which the Bruins used to select Glen Wesley.

Ok Mr Goalie/statsman , is it just me or are Canadian goalies a dying breed? Most playoff goalies and teams #1 goalies seem to be Eauropean,Russian, or American. Percentage of current Canadian NHL goalies must be close to the lowest in history.

Re: Sports Talk
With the exception of BC, yes you are right. Especially Quebec. Quebec has Fleury and Bernier who are both old. Who else do they have? I can't think of any.Forrest Gump wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 7:20 pm Ok Mr Goalie/statsman , is it just me or are Canadian goalies a dying breed? Top 11 BC goalies of all time by games played (notice that 5 are active): At least Quebec has Fleury... But Alberta? You have to go all the way down to 14th! Ontario has Mike Smith and that's it... Manitoba has just 1 as well... Sask has two at least...

Re: Sports Talk
Canada seems to be treading water at the world championships so far. I guess it's to be expected given this is probably our E or D team at best but some of the more elite players (Barzal -- sad, as he's from Coquitlam) have disappointed for sure.

Re: Sports Talk
When was the last time a player had the most playoff points but his team didn't advance to the final? Could be McDavid this season.

Re: Sports Talk
Good question , maybe Glacier knows. Judging by the points probably the Colorado players have the least odds to catch up, but seeing that the Tampa/NY series could still go 6 or 7 games,I'd say Zibanejad or Kucherov have the best chance. And boy that Makar sure is quite the high octane player on the back end, both offensively and defensively.

Re: Sports Talk
Peter Forsberg did it in 2002 and 1999.
Before that it was 1986 when Dougie Gilmour and Bernie Federko lead the playoffs despite being on St. Louis.
Before that it was 1969 when Phil Esposito led the playoffs.
Before that it was 1968 when Bill Goldsworth on Minnesota was the leader.
Before that it was 1931 when Cooney Weiland of Boston won the playoff scoring race. That's quite amazing considering there was only 2 rounds in the playoffs back then, so he only played one round!
BTW, from 1893 to 1993 American teams won the cup 27 times... this year will be the 28th year in a row an American team takes home the cup.
