Just look at those pics from early Jan 1985 and Dec 24 1983 and check the temps at the time. Less extreme than this time around and it supported lots of people. The city is definitely playing it more safe nowadays.

Don't think this is true. Pretty sure the last time the Fraser froze at New Westminster was January 1969, and before that, January 1950.

Gonna guess starting around 730 for some. Closer to 8 for others.
Radar has precip coming in from the north/NW but humidities seem to be in the 60% range. Weather apps seem to say start time at 8 or 9.
The sky looks like it’s imminent where I am.

Did you test out the ice on lost lagoon?

Not possible to walk on it. Yeah, it's surprising but that's the reality. Lots of open water areas.
Vancouver Parks put some lifeguards to secure the lake.

Something to keep in mind... things might be a bit further along with the freeze up on the Fraser but there is a lot more river traffic these days.

Looks like this was shot a bit further upstream on the south arm in Richmond. Completely frozen near the edges, and it seems like the ice chunks are not moving anymore because the river has stopped flowing due to a thin layer of ice covering it.
