A few flurries in Kensington. Down to -9.2ËšC after a max of -8.2 (which was probably at midnight, haven't seen it warmer than -9.0 today).
It's called clown range for a reason.

I hit -14.3C this morning. In 2021 I have broken both my all-time record high temperature and my all-time low. Crazy.

Should not come as a surprise but its snowing pretty hard in Nanaimo again. Haven't been able to get my piddly work van out for 2 days now and suspect I'll have the same lack of success tomorrow at the rate its presently going.

At YXX you gotta go back to early Feb 1989 for highs in the same range as today. Arctic blasts in 1990, 1993, 1996, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, and 2020 don't seem to make the cut.
Feb 1 1989: -10.3c/-15.3c
Feb 2 1989: -10.9c/-14.8c

And before that, late November 1985.
Nov 26, 1985: -10.5c/-16.7c

Lows were extreme in early Jan 1982, but highs were not as anomalous.
Jan 5, 1982: -8.1c/-18.6c
Jan 6, 1982: -7.4c/-18.9c

Before that, Jan 1971 also featured extreme low highs
Jan 11, 1971: -10.0c/-12.2c

But yeah, I think you're correct. Unless I missed something, today could end up being the coldest high temp at YXX since late December 1968.
Dec 28, 1968: -16.7c/-18.3c
Dec 29, 1968: -15.0c/-20.0c
Dec 30, 1968: -12.2c/-17.8c

Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam is mostly solidly frozen near the edges but the middle is still far too thin with a few large bits of open water.

Dec 28, 1968: -16.7c/-18.3c
Dec 29, 1968: -15.0c/-20.0c
Dec 30, 1968: -12.2c/-17.8c
Same for Hope and many other stations in BC.

In Vancouver, if we consider the diurnal high temp (-9.3°C so far), it would be the 8th coldest ever and the coldest since... Dec. 1968.
Official high (10 pm-10 pm) is -8.1°C, 12th coldest ever. Coldest since November 1985.

Just imagine what the highs were in Vancouver during the legendary arctic blast of late Jan/early Feb 1893. The numbers for other stations are off the charts with that one.

I'd guess at least 4-5 straight highs below -10c, and maybe a couple in the -13c/-14c range, or even lower.

I thought you mentioned temps hit -7.8c between hourly obs 10pm-11pm last night?

Regardless, a high of -8.1c would be the 17th coldest ever recorded for Vancouver. 13th coldest for YVR.

The coldest I've ever experienced was in our neighbourhood in December 2008 when the temperature stayed static around minus 17-18 C for 2 or 3 days during the inversion. Probably because of our complete lack of wind.
