GEM has the trough closer to the coast after New years with the ridge further east and looking a bit healthier than the GFS. Still lots to decide later this week but I don’t see us warming up significantly anytime soon

Looks like some moisture is pushing in from the west.

Not sure how far it will make it though.

Yes, I would agree with that. I was watching the radar all day yesterday and it was evident that the South Island was in the centre of the upper trough line. The moist, southerly flow was persistent to the east over the Fraser Valley while we had variable cloudiness and the odd flurry. I suspect there was some rain (snow) shadow effect as well.

There's no way we reach our predicted high of -8c in the central valley.
This is the coldest temperature l've experienced in a number of years.

Been a bit dissatisfying so far here. It looked really promising when the winds shifted around 4pm yesterday and those dark low clouds advanced from the east but nothing major came from it.

We have had just about 7cm since last night and I have a feeling it’ll snow lightly most of the day, so not too bad.

We really need a region wide snowfall right now. Up and down the coast. Just snow everywhere.
