Looks similar to 2008-09, 2013-14 or 2016-17, where we're right at the threshold between a cold neutral and weak nina.

If we're going solely by year, then it's 1971, because the snowiest month of each winter was Jan (70-71) and Dec (71-72).

One of the most significant snowstorms in recorded history across the south coast occured during Jan 1971. YVR recorded about 100cm in just over four days.

Annual snowfall for 1971 was further inflated with about 80cm in December, including a white Christmas.

The winter of 1971/72 was absolutely epic. by FAR the snowiest it has ever been in places like Kamloops! 81cm of snow on the ground in December. Also, deepest snow ever recorded in January (74cm), February (71cm), and March (43cm)!

Plenty of snow here on the south coast in December and January during winter '71/72. Two arctic blasts - one in late December and one in late January.

Otherwise the prevailing pattern was chilly N/NW flow, broken by a few periods of zonal flow with arctic air firmly entrenched in the interior (which likely really helped us on the south coast with all the marginal snowfalls in Dec and Jan).

Edit: Late October 1971 was extremely chilly too, with some snow recorded at YVR.

Good stats find l recall being in elementary school at the time and we had frost in early October l thought it was early by our standards was living at 49th and Fraser area at the time.

Was there snow on the ground for most of December and January ? The stats show plenty of moderate snowfalls in early/mid December and mid January but they were mostly marginal with heavy cold rain as well.

Going off memory l recall an Arctic blast and snow around Dec 9th or so, of course we had melting followed by another Arctic blast just before Christmas and a reload around boxing day.
Yes it was an epic month.
January/71 l'll never forget that epic snowfall, the Arctic front rolled in here on a Sunday evening. I remember hearing on the radio the day before on the Saturday that the temp. in Prince George dropped something like 30f l could be off maybe the stats guru's could look up that one.

But yeah, that 4-5 day stretch in January 1971 was special (as I've said before, one of the biggest snowfalls in recorded history in Vancouver).

Looks like a low dropped down the coast along the arctic front. At YVR it was mostly showery with temps around 5/6c on the 10th (Sunday), but by late evening temps quickly plummeted to -5/-6c along with steady snow and winds. The low then stalled off the coast until late on the 14th/early on the 15th, with temps hovering between -4c and -10c. Multiple rounds of moderate to heavy snow, totalling ~75-125cm across the region.

Prince George dropped from 5c to -15c on the 8th (Friday), and from -14c to -25c on the 9th (Saturday).

That was January 10th, 1972. 15cm at YVR, 20-25cm in south Vancouver.

Arctic air moved in later that month, with temps solidly below freezing from the 24th thru the 29th.
