I don't know what to say at this point. This situation is just beyond anything imagined. Like, we knew the climate was changing and going to eventually be unrecognizable. But we went all in over the course of one season.
It's been building up to this point. Before you had to really pay attention and know what you were seeing. Now it's in your face for months on end. And as wetcoast alluded to, getting relief is essentially getting "average" temps for a few days.

In June, I got in arguments with climate change deniers as to whether something like that event would repeat in our lifetimes. I said yes, but that it would take a decade or two, most likely. While overall, the June heat wave was more significant, for the Lower Mainland and Whatcom County, this event is quite comparable in severity to last June.

I certainly was not expecting to top the all-time record high set last June at KBLI within two months!

We managed a lot out of a fairly non historic airmass today. June was like 5 or 6 degrees warmer at the upper levels

Got up to 35.8
27% Hum

I can see the smoke in the air above me but not at ground level. All day breeze out of the west kept the air good.

Current 32.8
Inside still 27.9 but the humidity is making it terrible at 62%

Just need the temps to drop a bit so I can open windows.

Here is my official bad mood reaction: (F this heat!)

The smoke is thickening now that the wind is almost dead. Nito is right, the smoke cover is going to keep temps high tonight. Bloody hell.

I'm curious as to how the smoke can keep the temperatures high at night but keep them cooler during the day. Anybody have any insights?

The exact same way: by reflecting radiation.

In the day, incoming radiation from the sun is reflected back out to space, depriving the surface of it and causing cooler conditions. In the night, outgoing infrared radiation from the surface is reflected back to it, depriving the surface of radiational cooling.

I don't remember the smoke having much of an impact on overnight lows in 2017 and 2018, but that could just be my confirmation bias at play.

A good soaking for the central coast though.
