The good news is we are likely done with upper 30s heat after this heatwave. Becomes hard to achieve such warm departures by late Aug with lower sun angles.

Ridiculous! I actually like the heat but you gotta feel for the ones that don’t and the environmental impacts at this point. You can see the Garry oak meadows here on the island are going brown. Big splotches of brown on the rocky hillsides here and there.

Normals for Abbotsford are 23C and 14C.

The fact that a cold trough is going to bring normal temps and another ridge building in behind it will bring a return to temps in the mid 30s is frustrating. Our climate is seriously screwed.

Some like you have empathy. Some like to watch the world burn. Either way we are going to cook all summer and I've slowly come to terms with it. We will likely follow it up with another winter fail as well since that is our new climate. That is not even negativity at this point, just statistically the most likely outcome.

Also...the latest smoke forecasts look pretty bad overnight into tomorrow. Downright horrendous for Metro Van.

One of our workers had to leave Mission due to the thick smoke coming in. Apparantly ash coated his car. Really surprised EC didnt issue any SWS or AQ warning. This is really smoke coming into the LM right now.

Would be good advise to avoid outdoor exercise the next 24 hours.

IIRC, I read about that area a while back... apparently it's the only natural grassland west of the coastal mountains here in BC. Ecosystem has been gradually disappearing over the last century though.

I'm tired of the excuses. We effed the planet, and now we suffer the consequences(except for heat lovers). And also, yes IMO that should be the leading news story whether it's unpleasant or not.

The scary thing is we were completely wrong with climate projections. Probably too conservative with future projections as well. Research a decade ago indicated conditions in SW BC and the PacNW would become more temperate with more extremes in Interior Canada and the Arctic. Less extremes of heat and cold here. The truth is that it looks like desertification is occuring with more heat extremes in Coastal Regions.

The argument that a lack of wildfire suppression has led to more forest fires has to stop. These fires are now occuring in areas with moisture-dependent vegetation (semi rain forests).

I know the earth will probably correct itself in due time after humans have been wiped out.

I did some digging into climate change research back around 2015 and came to similarly terrible conclusions. I do kind of understand why people deny this. It is a terribly depressing reality. If I could go back I would choose to know as little climate change knowledge as possible and just go about my merry way. But we are getting to the point where the weather is consistently, obviously extreme and you just can't ignore it anymore.

Hasn't research always pointed to warmer and drier summers across the PNW, coupled with warmer and wetter winters? Doesn't really seem conductive to desertification.

To which fires are you referring? It seems like the vast majority of wildfires across the province this year have occured and are occuring in semi-arid regions.

Fire suppression over the decades and last century has undoubtedly heightened the fire risk in many areas, as we've witnessed more dense forest creep into historically grassland ecosystems/regions (like the Thompson, Okanagan and east Kootenay valleys). These are dry and warm areas to begin with... once you add in the effects of climate change like longer droughts/heatwaves, the already heightened risk is elevated even further.

That ridge will probably trend east right over BC. More heat just around the corner.
