We have a cabin at Charlotte Lake in the West Chilcotin region and have been under evacuation order once before in 2004 and a few times since then we have been under evacuation alert. The closest the fire came in 2004 is about 4km. It's definitely stressful. The one thing about the fires in the Cariboo Chilcotin region is they burn through alot of beetle kill and dead fall so their is so much fuel available. However we are in a much better shape than we were even a few years ago. After the well-known interface fires of 2003, the government gave out grants to communities and also associations of cabin owners and recreational facilities for fire prevention measures. We also pooled alot of our own money and we hired contractors to basically put up fire guards around the recreational community and also to clear the forest floor of dead fall, cut down and remove dead trees and also erect signs in the forest service free campsites warning of the high winds and to be careful with fires. What my brother and dad often do is we will go and basically rake the forest floor on our own property removing all the large sticks, we'll cut down diseased trees and dead trees and once the fire danger starts to creep up, we set up emergency pumps with firehoses in case we have to water down the property or even fight a fire if it ever came to that.

If you head out there be very careful of the highway. The high heat melted the highway west of Puntzi Mountain because it is just sealcoated Highway. There were big ruts last week, so they lowered the speed limit to 70 km per hour temporarily. Another bad part was crossing the fraser River. For some reason they had patched up the short little construction zone with sealcoating only.

Down in that area it was probably 45°, so it just melted. When a guy came flying down the hill at 100km/h he sunk in and flipped end over end right into the rock wall and died. Another sad casualty as a result of the heat wave.

Wow..that's insane. Thanks for the heads up. Ill definitely slow down near those areas. Never a dull moment on that highway. Last year it was the flooding we were worried about. Now there's a fire at Big Stick lake I'm a little concerned about. It grew very fast over the last few days.. It looks like they have a guard up around it in my direction. Evacuation alert for Big stick and Clearwater lake area.

Actually quite near Loggers Lake but a bit further SW. The parking lot should be Loggers Lake, but our car couldn't get quite all the way up so we parked one lot further down Cheakamus Lake Rd and just hiked up the Riverside Trail.

Can someone explain why Lytton has two weather stations? Same with other smaller places such as Quesnel, Revelstoke etc.?
