Cold air tends to lock into E Oregon and it takes a stiff southerly wind to boot it out.
Portland typically gets the arctic outflow several days later than we do, and typically gets rid of it several days later as well. Sometimes quite a bit later.

The low-level cold can be astoundingly tenacious there in the absence of a good strong south wind to scour it out. I was living in Portland in January 2004 when for most of a week the forecasters kept promising the thaw was happening tomorrow and the showers of freezing rain went on and on for days as the ice got thicker and thicker. Or, in my neighborhood, the sleet got deeper and deeper; I was in a microclimate that favored sleet (ice pellets) over freezing rain.

The Columbia Gorge is even worse in this regard. Got about 10 cm of ice in 2004.
It's called clown range for a reason.

Normally look at this sensor to gauge cold air aloft (500m) in the Valley and it's only reading -1.3C.

I don't see it happening but I'm not a met. Maybe Tyler sees something I don't.
I wonder what the elevation for the Cypress gauge is vs the Grouse one, because Grouse is reading -3

That was a pretty sweet little event here. YVR recorded four straight subfreezing days, including lows of -12.2c and -10.7c on the 4th and 5th respectively. There was a few hours of freezing rain across metro Vancouver during the overrunning event on Jan 6th and 7th, but was nothing compared to Vancouver's big league (relatively) ice storms in Jan 1935, Jan 1969, Jan 1979 or Dec 1996.

Incidentally, that was also the last January where YVR dropped below -10c... crazy to think that was 17 years ago now.

Well, I guess we are still chasing the ever elusive regional snow storm this winter. Something not dependant on elevation or proximity to water. The search continues. :problem:

Onto winter 2021-22. Though I suspect we'll probably see a region wide 10cm slushstorm sometime in March or April

l'm thinking Grumps used the Kuchera ratio when the 10:1 ratio was ineffect little too much batter used in those fluffy flakes of bran this morning.
