That is a ridiculous cold airmass in western Canada on the long range gfs the last few runs. Kind of looks odd, blocking is pretty meh, but who knows. Could happen I guess :eh:

There have been a few recent gfs runs that have bitter cold In the interior up into Yukon at the start of February. Just need a mechanism to tap into that and we would be in business.

I’m more interested in the Tuesday/Wednesday system. That one seems to have a lot of potential. Looks like a traditional South Island special except the track right now isn’t quite right. A few modifications and I can see a large s one

Yeah, I acutally didn't mind the 12Z GFS. Chilly pattern turning into a potentially colder one.

Of course the next run can and probably will look different, but I'd take my chances on that. There would definitely be some surprises with that setup.

UKMET looks like it is showing some decent snowfall amounts, but I can't get a closer zoom. Maybe Bono can post a closer look?

Better for the island but Sunday looks better for the mainland.

UKMET is fully onboard (2nd best model behind the euro last I heard)

Yeah its only a brief warm up on the 12Z GFS. Snowstorm Sunday followed by mostly cold onshore flow with a potential arctic pattern at the beginning of February.
