And for snow that makes a huge difference here. If you have a low track favourably, it will draw in the cold from the interior. Therefore, the more cold available to draw in the better.

These are situations where you don't need an arctic front for snow, because the low draws in the cold from the interior on its own. So during a cold onshore flow, we want lots of cold available in the interior. This is why January 1996 was so snowy. Arctic air was firmly entrenched in the interior. The lows drew in the cold air. Eventually an arctic front did rush in but that was after the snowfalls.
