Re: January 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
Comparing snow before 1953 (no snow depth data) is as impossible as comparing goalies before 1955 (no save percentage stats). Given how cold some of the winters were like in 1929 or 1916, there was probably much more snow on the ground and for much longer when compared to anything in recent memory.Typeing3 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 11:14 am 1929 was leagues better than 1996. 20-40cm accumulated over several days across Metro Vancouver just as a deep freeze set in for about a week with highs below -5c and lows near -15c. Then we completely dried out for about half a month in early-mid Feb.
The Fraser froze solid enough by early Feb that people were skating on the river in New West. The first half of January was chilly with average temps around 1-2c which primed the river for a freeze when the arctic air hit.

Re: January 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
It was another good EPS run this morning. When the EPS is this consistent. It is rarely wrong. We'll see.

Re: January 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
2016-17 was a nice throwback to those winters we used to see on a more frequent basis throughout the 20th century.Glacier wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 1:30 pm Comparing snow before 1953 (no snow depth data) is as impossible as comparing goalies before 1955 (no save percentage stats). No major arctic blasts, but the persistence of temps near/below freezing led to continuous snowcover over a lot of the lower mainland from early Dec thru mid Jan. We had another big dump of snow in early Feb so it was pretty much at least 2 months with snow on the ground.
Was even more impressive for higher elevations (Burnaby mountain, Westwood plateau, Como lake, etc) and inland locales (Coquitlam/Surrey) that held on to snowpack through the mid-late Jan warmup with snow on the ground well into March.
