All those best analogs were solid. I'd say 1998/99 was the worst but it was still a lot better than 1999/00.
If we're judging from an arctic blast standpoint, I believe the Dec '98 event was the most significant out of the three winters. It was short lived though, so that's why the late January '96 blast was more impressive overall, IMO.
From a snowfall perspective, I think 2007-08 probably wins out, though all three winters all had at least one decent high impact event.

For Abbotsford at least, I think the January 1996 arctic blast was snowier than anything we got in 1998/99 or 2007/08.
It actually looks similar to the February 2017 snow event. Multiple days of heavy snow. There was even a classic continental arctic front at the end of January 1996.
That said, I think 2007/08 may have been snowier in terms of season total but the January 1996 event was all at once, which is more memorable in my opinion.

Maybe the worst for lowland snow but 98/99 was the best year to be a skier/boarder. It was the year of record high snowpack and skiing until July 1999 on Cypress.
2017/2018 was good in Feb 2018.
2010-2011 I remember there was a lot of hype about how snowy and cold the winter is going to be. And it was a bust overall. I hope that's not a sign of what's going to happen this winter. There was some snow in January of 2011 but it was the Spring that was one of the coldest on record and summer 2011 was dreadful. Cool and wet.

That January 2011 bust was legendary but not in our favour. Yet it showed the atmospheric conditions were favourable. It just didn't work out due to the track of the low going north if I understand correctly, and models collapsing 48 hours prior to the event.
If that January 2011 event had verified, then that winter would have been historical.
This is why you have to go with climo around here until the arctic air and snow has actually arrived.

The late Feb 2011 arctic blast was decent. YVR recorded a high of -0.7C on the 25th under full sunshine.
Past Feb 20th or so, pulling off subfreezing highs under sunny skies is no mean feat around here.
