What is this? A Siberian and North Atlantic SSW? Whatever it is its a MASSIVE SSW event modelled.

Growing up in Vancouver, I remember it would be raining down on Marine Drive and you would head up the south slope and there would be 10cm by the time you were at 41st ave.

I do!

It was some sort of squall that setup and feed moisture North into White/Rock/Surrey/Delta/Burnaby/New West/Coquitlam/Maple Ridge.

I picked up over 20cm from that.

Why can't we have nice things like that anymore.

Ah yes, the good old South Vancouver microclimates.

Going up Main or Fraser from Marine was a nightmare in those scenarios. Rain near the river and heavy snow by 49th/41st. Cars and busses spinning out everywhere.

Lots of cold air in the interior at the time but nothing reached the coast for that one. Cold onshore flow did the trick.

Late January 2002 was similar too I think. YVR got nearly a foot with that storm.

Edit: Come to think of it, I think 2008 was the last time we got any snow in late Jan. We're well overdue for something significant in that timeframe.

If you look at 2014, it was more concentrated over WPAC whereas 2019 was more basin-wide.
