Been a while since a good, cold, foggy December inversion. Won’t complain if one happens, assuming it doesn’t stick around too long.

Early December 2017 had quite a persistent inversion from what I can remember.

After that ridiculously resilient ridge in early December 2017, we saw the ridge retrograde into the GOA mid month. Had some close calls for significant snows. That Fraser Valley ice storm was so close to being epic snows. Upper air temperatures were just a touch too warm west of Agassiz.

Long stretches of freezing fog are pretty cool... everything gets coated with thick frost/ice that can look like snow.

We had a big snow on the 19th in December 2017. 20-30cm

Shawnigan Lake seems to do really well in terms of snow in the winter, especially in comparison to other nearby regions.

I don’t think we’ve seen as much of a drop off in average snowfall as some other places in recent decades. Probably because we get some heavy wet snowfalls when there is not much real cold air around.

You can thank the smoke for that. Those heatwaves in 2017 and 2018 were forecast to be record breaking but came in like 5-10 degrees cooler without the direct sunlight.

Elevation has a lot to do with that. Even 60 m up from sea level can make a huge difference, and Shawnigan Lake is over twice that according to this source:

Also thank the relocation of the station of record for Vancouver from downtown to Sea Island. The latter is strongly affected by sea breezes and is one of the coolest spots in the entire Lower Mainland on warm summer days.

I live very close to 500ft as my signature says. Not sure if elevation is a factor in snowfall decline when comparing to averages. I don’t have time to look up the data but I seem to remember the 2000’s were actually snowier here than both the 80’s and 90’s
