It's really interesting how the Rockies seems to divide the humid from the dry so well. We also see this in the minimum daily temperatures (dry air gets a lot colder at night obviously). You have Fort St. John and Princeton at the same elevation, but Princeton is colder at night in July. Yes, I know, Fort St. John airport is on top of a hill, so it gets warmer nights than the surrounding locations, but still, when you're over 1000km to the north, you shouldn't be warmer at night on average.

Even when we think of the hottest places in BC like Osoyoos and Ashcroft and Lytton, the ONLY reason their nights are warmer than places in Alberta at the same latitude is that they are so much lower in elevation.

Although this recent stretch does seem a little longer than usual. They will cool down dramatically in about 8-10 days.

Not really. They are just prone to extreme temperature changes. I'm sure they will be hot again later this summer.

Compared to the "average" temperature, yes it is warm. Temperatures 30-35C are normal to see each summer though.

What is not normal, is the number of days that they have had these temperatures. It's usually not so stable. And yes, I know about the record but that is just for Verkhoyansk.

Since 2000, Verhojansk has had an average of 5.2 days > 30C per year. Before this year, highest temp. was 35.3C and 33.2C in June (still since 2000).
Finally, average high for this time of year is only 20C, so this past week was totally exceptional there.

Yakutsk is in the same general area and their records are quite high. 38C back in 1942. Temps over 35C may be extreme and rare but can occur based on past climate data.

Yakutsk is located almost 1,000 km south of Verhojansk!



Yakutsk is way warmer than Verhokansk. I say it again: 35C in Verhojansk is exceptional (there were a 38C (!) and 6 Tx > 30C) and even in Yakutsk, 35C is not common at all. Since 2000, there is an average of 11.1 days > 30C. It can happen, of course, but as you said, it's rare!

Verkoyansk is an interesting place...kind of like Snag in the Yukon - 'Verkhoyansk fights over the title of the coldest village in the world with Oymyakon, an area to the south-east of the town. However, it holds the Guinness World Record for the greatest temperature range on Earth, from -67.8C in winter to 37.3C in summer.

Now they have set an all time max temp!

BTW, Ojmjakon is colder than Verhojansk.
The record of -67.8C in Verhojansk is probably unreliable. Since 1947 (actual location of the station), the record is -63.0C in January 1982.
