January 1985 at 28.2 mm is the driest January on record at YV.R Other dry January's include 1963 and 1993. In the case of 1993,it was followed by the driest February on record. I remember that year. I was in high school. Yes I'm.old. it was actually a great winter.Lots of snow on the ground from December storms and it remained on the ground for much of the month of January 1993 due to cold temps. A little warm, wet spell at the end of the Jan 1993 then February was cold, bone dry, and crisp! That was a fantastic winter.
We're in a weather whiplash right now after such a wet year overall and such a wet pattern, now we're into dry just like that. It's so weird. YVR is showing a monthly total of 21.2mm Although that may not include today's rainfall. Even so I highly doubt we would break a record this month for the driest January.That would mean basically 3 weeks with no precep, which is very rare.Almost unprecedented for this time of year.

1984-85 and 1992-93 had snow on the ground continuously weeks, or even months. Similar to 2016-17.

Most of those January's were either ridgdy or had continuous reloads of backdoor arctic blasts that ended up cooler than they would be otherwise as we had snow on the ground.

GFS ensemble is a bit colder as well.

Cypress was icy today but it was pretty up top. On my drive down I saw 2 flashes in the sky to the east. That was weird.

I was also in high school (grade 11) in January 1993. Our Jazz band was top in Canada that year, and we flew to San Antonio Texas to represent Canada at the international association of jazz educators - (would have met dizzie gillespie but he died enroute to the event) - doh!

Anyway, the point is, it was very cold early that year. Sub freezing every day - and I remember clearly taking off at YVR with snow on the ground, We stopped in Spokane and there was 25+" of snow on the ground.... Further on, looking out the window I could tell there was snow on the ground all the way until about the Arizona border. I couldn't believe it. The Jet stream must have gone way south - and a very deep high pressure system kept things cold north of that line. One day it got to 27C in San Antonio. Back to snow when we got back 10 days later lol. Crazy year!

For what it's worth, this is a pretty strong signal on the weeklies for cold into SWBC/PNW around the end of the month into early February.

I hype up January 1993 all the time. Our last cold January, with an average temp below freezing at YVR. 32 years ago now...
