As a teenager growing up in Surrey in the 80's I seem to remember some epic snows between Christmas and New Years. Unfortunately
hard to get data from North Surrey as much different from what happens at YVR.

Yes Flakes your correct the 70's as well 😋 l remember it was like an extra Christmas gift between Christmas and New Years made more fun being off school for Christmas break. AI Canada use to have data available for volunteer stations in the L. M. I was one for 4 years 72 to76 precipitation only for Kitsilano/Point Grey.

Very true. Case in point, 1981-82 was memorable. Wet snow everyday (sometimes heavy) between Christmas and New Years, finally followed by a classic arctic blast in the first week of January with temps dipping close to -20c (aided by the deep snowcover) in the eastern suburbs.

Compared with today, there was actually a lot more stations in operation back then across our region and the country in general. You can access them on the EC historical data page. Some only had temperature or precip data, but it's better than nothing, especially true at present with a massive dearth of good weather data across the Lower Mainland because so many stations have shut down in the past 20 odd years.

I was living in Port Moody back in the winter of 81/82 Tman, I remember we were going to my parents place the Canucks were playing the Oilers on New Years eve, the Canucks beat them 3-1 at the old Pacific Coliseum it was snowing that night the Arctic fart must have arrived around New Years. l don't think it was between Christmas and New Years going off memory l recall we had thundersnow when the Arctic fart arrived and we were at my parents then.

Good memory! Yeah, between we had sloppy, wet snow everyday between Christmas and New Years in 1981, which continued into the first couple days of 1982 before the arctic air settled in a few days later. By that time, we had about 30cm settled snow on the ground, which completely froze. The snow depth was actually pretty impressive given the freeze-thaw conditions and the fact it was all wet snow.

It wasn't one of those classic flash freeze Arctic front scenarios though. Arctic air had moved down from the north and settled in the interior in late Dec 1981, which initially gave us the preceeding 10-day period of cold NW flow and constant wet snow. It slowly trickled/bled into the Fraser Valley and then into Metro Vancouver and the island. Kind of like a more extreme version of the arctic blasts in January 2012 or January 2020 for us locally, because the overall period with winter weather was much longer lasting.

Looks like Jan 3 low of -11 to Jan 6 low of -16.5 then started to moderate. Looks like Jan 82 was a very cool
month. Data was from Green Timbers weather station.
