Odds are favorable for a colder than normal February due to the very weak -ENSO state but the later than usual plunge could translate into a colder spring instead.

Analogues are 100% useless and should forever stop being used.
Well said.

Has anyone seen Monty (Shawnigan Lake) on the AF? Haven't seen him here since last spring. Makes you wonder when regular members just disappear.

To stay in Christmas spirit, I'll say I'm kind of happy for the folks out east. Their slump in recent years has rivalled some of the worst out here, at least relative to normal. They've had a stretch of brutal non-existent winters. This upcoming blast is due. Hopefully of course, we get something after that.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad passing.
Thanks man, it's definitely sad even if he was getting old and it wasn't that unexpected. But these things happen, you grieve and move forward. He was fond of talking about weather, and it was funny how he would brag about the most rudimentary knowledge of forecasting models, ie; "The blue means cold and red means warm!" kind of thing.

On the other hand, my Dad's best friend was a meteorologist who started out in the 60's and get this, DIDN'T GO TO SCHOOL for the job. Great at the job and all, but imagine becoming a meteorologist nowadays. That's like 10 years of schooling.

I still write that guy when cold air is incoming here and he emails me a well written synopsis of what he's seeing. He charges companies exorbitant amounts of money for that kind of analysis, which I find kind of hilarious because we can get similar quality forecasts here at times. Makes me wonder if some people here could make money at this.

l agree Kells it definitely can be a difficult time of the year. Having a support network definitely helps but your still dealing with it on your own.

PortKells wrote: Wed Dec 25, 2024 3:20 pm It's been a weird year...up and down health wise, Dad passed in November, and other stuff keeping life off balance. The weirdest things will set me off. I'm looking to get back into meditation again next year, I remember being so much more resilient when I was practicing before.

To your point about snowstorms, I agree and disagree. Snowstorms seem to be one where most people actually get scared of being out, and that's not a bad thing. We have warming centres for the homeless, everyone has heat. Vehicle accidents are mostly human error snow or not, whereas a tree falling on you is just bad luck and power outages cause chaos for rural settings like this one. But I'll agree that arctic airmasses can suck for a lot of people so yeah.

But on the bigger point I know you're not cheering on people getting hurt or having their stuff damaged, it's just a matter of wording that I could easily not care about if I was in the right state of mind. I never used to hate windstorms until I moved on to this farm and into an RV that's flimsy and surrounded by dead (and apparently live) trees that could make us a distant memory in a split second! It's all a matter of perspective.

Merry Christmas to you, and hopefully a healing time for many.
My condolences about your dad passing.

The 12Z GEM wants to flood the Fraser Valley late next week. Likely way overdone but it's definitely a very wet run.
