The last time YVR recorded a subfreezing high temp in late January was 1997.

The last time YVR recorded a temp below -10c in late January was 1996.

It's actually realistically possible we break the cold drought this upcoming January. But I don't want to jinx it so... :shh: :silent:

The downside to living in the 50's and 60's is that we wouldn't have the advanced computer weather models and this forum wouldn't exist. :bang:

A couple days late in the month with subfreezing highs and lows < -10c at YVR? Yes, definitely possible. But the drought has been extremely long as mentioned, 1997 for the former and 1996 for the latter.

A cold monthly average? I think the wait will go on. 1993 will live on in memory.

January 2024 featured a a generational arctic outbreak. I think we need to take what we can get at this point. The 90's are basically a different climate ago let alone the 50's/60's.

MONTHLY record in Tofino (since 1943)!

With a maximum temperature of 16.5°C [at 6 am!], the station broke its December record.
The previous record (16.0°C) was set... last year.

Also 15.9°C in Solander Island, 15.2°C in West Vancouver or 14.7°C in Prince Rupert.

Unfortunately the January 2024 arctic blast didn't happen in the late month period, which has had a complete dearth of cold snaps in almost 30 years. The early and mid January periods have had better luck in that timeframe. Not sure why late Jan has had it so much worse as that is historically when we would see our coldest arctic blasts.
