Re: December 2019 Forecasts and Discussions
Lets bring on a December and January 1990/1991 redux! Even better, add February 1989 into the mix. We can have all three.

Re: December 2019 Forecasts and Discussions
Was it Dec 96 or Jan 97 where the major snow storms culminated in an overrunning event and freezing rain at -5°. I think that was the first time I ever experienced freezing rain. It was a bugger to scrape off the car windows.

Re: December 2019 Forecasts and Discussions
The ~Dec 15-Jan 10 period in '90-91 was pretty insane.
Classic arctic front pushed thru on December 18th dropping temps like a rock. YVR saw a -7.0C/-11.8C day on the 21st. Temps warmed above freezing by boxing day just before another strong arctic front blasted through the south coast, dropping temps to -14C at YVR. This was followed by a massive overrunning event on the 30th. 30-40cm fell across the region.
Temps marginally warmed thereafter with little precip just as another wave of arctic air reached the coast by Jan 5th. Another massive snowfall to cap things off on the 7th/8th, dropping 30-40cm across the region yet again.

Re: December 2019 Forecasts and Discussions
Was in December '96, on top of the 40-70cm of snow that was on the ground. That was the last major ice storm to strike Vancouver.Forrest Gump wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 6:34 pm Was it Dec 96 or Jan 97 where the major snow storms culminated in an overrunning event and freezing rain at -5°. Not sure if you were around here in January 1979, but there was also a fairly significant ice storm back then as well.

Re: December 2019 Forecasts and Discussions
I was definitely here , moved to Vancouver from Montreal in the summer of 69 (just like the Bryan Adams song) . Weird that I don't remember considering I was primarily working outdoors in 79 at a sawmill , western forest products in New Westminster which later became Doman forest products before they shut it down in mid 80's.

Re: December 2019 Forecasts and Discussions
Yes we had some amazing cold and snowy periods. I vaguely remember that 90/91 score. I drove up to BBy mtn and there was about 3 to 4 feet of snow on the ground at the top. Looked like top of Grouse or Seymour

Do you remember the Jan '71 snowstorm?Forrest Gump wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 7:09 pm I was definitely here , moved to Vancouver from Montreal in the summer of 69 (just like the Bryan Adams song) . I checked the stats for YVR for Jan '79. Looks like I was wrong; Jan 10th, 1979 shows 17.4mm of rain with temps between 0.1C and 2.2C. Just a lot of cold rain for western sections of Vancouver. Further east though (Surrey/Pitt Meadows into the valley), it looks like it was pretty significant ice storm. -0.3C/-2.9C in Abbotsford with 15.6mm of ice.
