MLA Ben Stewart thinks grape growers need government money because last winter's extreme cold killed a lot of plants. He owns a winery so of course he'd take the government money.

What he doesn't mention is that vineyards have been putting in warmer climate grapes for 30 years. The media blames it climate change. LOL!

Update... The -27.6C temperature at the Penticton airport over the weekend was the coldest temperature ever recorded anywhere in the city. Records began in 1907. Not that the city has recorded temperature of -22C or colder in back-to-back winters for the first time since 1937.

Pure awesomeness! That was the winter that Kamloops' snow depth was 81cm deep, a full 20 cm deeper than any time before or since.

EDIT: OOPS, no, that was December 1971/January 1972. So it was the following winter that Kamloops had record amounts of snow on the ground.

Penticton hasn't seen back to back to back -18C/0F winters since it had 4 years in a row since the 1950s.

Also, Penticton had 51 hours of -18 or colder, including the coldest temperature ever recorded. The last time a cold snap was this severe was November 1985. Yes, that's right, NOVEMBER!

'70-71, '71-72 and '72-73 were a great streak of winters. '71-72 being the highlight in the Lower Mainland with snow on the ground for essentially the entire winter.

Absolutely. True in the interior as well. Canada's snowiest season on record was set at Mount Copeland near Revelstoke then too. 2,446.5 centimetres (963.2 in) of snow in 1971/72.

And back to Penticton for a second... lowest extreme every season since 1907/08...

Using hourly data, 2023 was the warmest year on record in the central interior, but only the 5th warmest at YXX and 8th at YYJ and YVR.

2015 is the warmest year on the south coast and the Okanagan. For the Cariboo, 1987 remains the warmest year on record. 1955 was the coldest year on record everywhere since hourly records began in 1953.

Yeah... arctic events don't seem to last as long nowadays. I remember as a kid it used to be common to have a week of sunny days where it stayed below freezing. Nowadays, it seems like the arctic air moves in, but the clouds hang around, maybe there's one or two sunny days if we're lucky, then it's back to cloud/snow/rain and then the inevitable warming trend. This is a purely anecdotal observation, but the data seems to align with my thoughts. Of course others might see it differently.

This aligns with the the gradual trend of less cold months (ex. average <1c, <0c, etc) at YVR over the period of record. Especially in January of course.
