Kids have had 2 snow days. In Richmond too! When is the last time that happened?Weather101 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 7:58 am 30 cm of snow? A bit more snow today? A week of cold weather that some ponds actually froze to skate on?
Yeah, the curse for this year is broken. I'd go as far to say the curse in general is now broken.
The fact Vancouver has once again seen a snowstorm before Toronto, especially in January, is a win.
Our winters are so much different than the rest of Canada. We are a warm climate, so to get this in an El Nino is definitely a curse breaker.

Plus we are looking at data from a long time ago.Rubus_Leucodermis wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 7:52 am Based on this, we just experienced the 10th greatest snowfall since 1898, and the 3rd greatest January snowfall. Add to that the coldest daily January temperatures in about 40 years and it’s safe to say the January curse has been broken.
No, the monthly mean temperatures will not fall, but you can’t win ’em all. This month has been sufficiently excellent to break the curse. And I wouldn’t be surprised if we make progress on some of those monthly mean stats before the 2020’s end.
The climate is different now. It's a new climate. So this was a big score. I don't think we can look back at those stats as something we can match. They need to be updated to reflect the climate we now live in.

Horrendous roads in Burnaby and New Westminster. No wonder school is cancelled...no one has been plowing the secondary roads. It's unacceptable.
A good municipality keeps a fleet of vehicles to handle this instead of selling off their equipment and then relying on busy contractors.

What a bummer, my daughter was so upset this morning. She studied so hard for two AP Biology and Chemistry tests that were supposed to be today.Weather101 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:03 am I honestly can't remember... That should definitely tell you something haha

Roads are in good shape in Coquitlam… considering. Looks like they’ve gone through a lot of the side streets as well.wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:07 am Horrendous roads in Burnaby and New Westminster. Does New West not have their own fleet?

Totally fine where I drove through. Maybe secondary and neighborhood streets and not sure but in my neighborhood everything was plowed.

That system is ahead of schedule. Snow is reported down south where should not be. We will see what will this bring.

Re: January 2024 Forecasts and Discussions
Yea there is always 2 sides. I read a bunch of people whining last week that they didn’t call a snow day on Friday cause we had a few centimetres of snow and it was too cold for the kids to wait at the bus. But I was out driving and the roads were pretty good. And my daughter actually wants to go to school. There was no need for a snow day for 90% of the area.
Of course today there is school here but we have a snowstorm moving in. I think they should call a snow day today, people are going to be scrambling to pick their kids up from school or daycare around lunchtime or early afternoon. Chaos to be sure. (My daughters school is closed because their sprinkler system malfunctioned and flooded 10 classrooms the other day)

Probably not. We need to preserve tax dollars to fund vanity projects!
This city seems to be only investing in Sapperton, Port Royal and Downtown New Westminster. Everywhere else seems to get the middle finger.

In the city proper, it’s the normal Vancouver story: main streets get attention, side streets get total neglect.wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2024 8:07 am Horrendous roads in Burnaby and New Westminster.
