Since we have an outflow wind event coming up, I figured I'd bring up a point for discussion.

Maybe its just me, but I've noticed that NE outflow winds don't cause nearly as many widespread power outages here in the valley, even when they gust 90+ km/h as winds from the S and SW often do. Is there any explanation for this?

I've wondered if the below zero temperatures, often associated with NE windstorms, affects how easily the branches break? That and or the power lines are sheltered from the NE direction?

Most trees don't have leaves on them by this time of year was always my thought and the ground isn't usually as saturated.

Good point, but S and SW windstorms this time of year often cause widespread damage, so the leaves can not be the only factor. The level of saturation on the ground probably plays a big role. Usually during S SW wind storms, the ground is very moist whereas during outflow events, the ground is dry. That could be it perhaps? Though if I recall, the December 2008 outflow windstorm caused widespread outages around Abbotsford. Could just be the luck of the draw?

I think Mount Baker and Whistler Blackcomb could fair well.

I'm ok with wet and mild, at least until Christmas. Thumbs up to wet and warm until then. Got work to do, ain't no time for that white stuff right now. Although the mountains could use some.

Well the windstorm we had in September what direction was that? I never seen so many broken trees in Richmond and in my area but all the trees were still covered in leaves and saturation does play a role.

I don't remember that windstorm but maybe it didn't affect the valley.

Or was it October? I don't remember now but it was impressive as f*ck it was the day the Canucks played Washington so had to be mid October
