Hopefully Messi can rally his troops. And maybe we'll get a fight or 2 as well the way things are going.

I'm not gonna lie, I'd really rather Argentina lose. They're a bunch of classless donkeys:

To put it mildly, I hope Croatia walk all over them.

Croatian players celebrated like that in front of Canada's bench after every goal. Their fans shouted Nazi slogans and mocked Borjan's family for fleeing his hometown. Sorry, don't feel bad for them at all. Go Argentina!

Van Gaal humbled... Dalic next? :shh:

https://www.skysports.com/football/news ... as-useless
Lionel Messi has twisted the knife into the Netherlands' World Cup exit after criticising Louis van Gaal's side for their direct approach in Argentina's dramatic and heated quarter-final win on Friday evening in Lusail.

Messi had superbly set up Nahuel Molina for Argentina's first-half opener, threading a sublime pass through the Dutch defence, before coolly slotting in a penalty in the 73rd minute after Denzel Dumfries fouled Marcos Acuna.

The Netherlands had rarely troubled Argentina during the match before substitute Wout Weghorst's header sparked them into life and he rolled the ball past goalkeeper Emi Martinez deep into stoppage time to send the game into extra-time.

Messi, who scored in the subsequent shootout, was left unimpressed by how Van Gaal had resorted to route one football to drag the Dutch back into the game.

"Van Gaal says that they play good football, but what he did was put on tall people and hit long balls," said Messi.

"I don't want to talk about the referee because you can't be honest. If you talk they sanction you, FIFA must think about it, they can't put a referee like that for these instances, they can't put a referee who isn't up to the task."

Having cupped his ear to the Netherlands' bench after scoring his penalty during the game, Messi gestured to Van Gaal that he 'speaks too much' at the end of a game laced with animosity.

Such a barbed reaction was ignited leading up to the contest by Van Gaal himself, who told Dutch publication NOS: "Messi is indeed the most dangerous player who creates the most chances and also makes them himself.

"But on the other hand he does not play much with the opponent when he has possession of the ball. That is also where our chances lie."

https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/footba ... 46256.html
“It was a tricky game. I thought we controlled the game really well. We went 2-0 up, basically we controlled the game. The ref was just giving everything for them. All of a sudden they get a good header, a good flick, which I couldn’t see and then it just turned upside down," said Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez.

"The ref was giving everything for them. He gave 10 minutes [added time] for no reason. He was giving free-kicks outside the box for them, like two, three times.

"He just wanted them to score, that’s basically it. So, hopefully we don’t have him that ref anymore. He’s useless."

Martinez saved Argentina’s first two penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis, with the Villa ‘keeper more effective than his opposite number, the 6-foot-8-inch Andries Nopper.

“I heard Van Gaal saying: ‘We’ve got an advantage in penalties, if we go to penalties we win.’ I think he needs to keep his mouth shut," Martinez added.

Fair enough. I suppose I should have more antipathy for the Croatian team, given how they beat England in 2018, but I have Croatian friends and no Argentinian friends, so that's the difference.

Croatia does it again! By the way, what's the deal with a player lying down behind a free kick wall? In case the ball goes through someone's five hole?

I still remember this song when I visited Croatia in 1971.

Hej, krcmarice, jos vina natoci
da pijemo sve dok traju noci
zivot tece, zivot brzo prolazi
posle svake noci zora dolazi

Yep. Sometimes players taking a free kick will hit them low and hard. Defensive players in the wall jump instinctively so having someone lie across the ground is to stop that play.

Congrats to Croatia. It's your ancestral country?

Yes , both parents from there (Yugoslavia/Croatia). And I wasn't born there nor in Canada but in Italy. Basically my parents were escaping communism and like a lot of people post war in 50's and 60's were looking for a better life and heard about Canada. It was a tough go, initially they tried Austria but got caught ,went to jail for a few days and then sent back. They then tried again, walking for miles and miles through fields and farms and then hopping on a train illegally heading for Italy, trapped in an enclosed car with some other people and no windows. It was especially tough for my mother as she was pregnant with me with very little food for several days. They finally busted out of the car when it seemed like they were in Italy. They then bumped into someone who suggested going to a nearby Catholic refugee camp in the town of Salo. What a miracle, and that is where I was born . Then another miracle occurred as someone there heard about our desire to go to Canada and sponsored us , we were given a one way boat ticket to Montreal, and as they say, the rest is history.
